FM Sector Prepares for Effects of Statutory Sick Pay Reforms

SSP reform is about to change how absence is felt across FM. From April, Statutory Sick Pay becomes a day one entitlement, and more employees will qualify than before.

For FM businesses, this will have a noticeable impact. Many frontline roles that previously sat below the earnings threshold will now be included, particularly across cleaning, security and maintenance.

There are clear benefits - employees will feel less pressure to work while unwell, which should help reduce presenteeism and support more consistent service delivery. However, paying SSP from the first day, combined with wider eligibility, will increase short-term absence costs, especially across large workforces and fixed-price contracts.

This means absence management, workforce planning and contract pricing will need closer attention!
