Fire Safety Compliance Hits 14-Year Low
Fire Safety Compliance Hits 14-Year Low
Fire safety compliance has fallen to a 14-year low. New research shows 43% of buildings in England failed their fire safety audit on first inspection over the past year. National compliance now sits at 57%, down from 69% in 2016/17.
Emergency routes and exits were the leading cause of failure, with more than 10,000 breaches linked to blocked or locked exits and faulty lighting. Maintenance gaps and missing or outdated Fire Risk Assessments also featured heavily.
Fire and Rescue Services carried out 4,000 fewer audits than in 2016, yet identified 4,000 more breaches last year. The pressure on estates and compliance teams is clear.
