BCO Celebrates the North's Best Workplaces

This year’s BCO Northern Awards highlighted a clear trend across the sector - offices are no longer being judged on aesthetics alone. The strongest projects combined sustainability, wellbeing, retrofit strategy and genuine usability.

The standard for workplace design keeps moving forward!

From heritage-led refurbishments in Halifax and Wigan, to Manchester developments driving social value and community engagement, the focus was firmly on creating workplaces that people actually want to spend time in.

A few themes stood out:

  • Retrofit-first thinking becoming commercially mainstream
  • Neuroinclusive and wellbeing-led design gaining real traction
  • Sustainability being embedded into operational performance, not added afterwards
  • Offices increasingly positioned as community and collaboration hubs

For the FM and workplace sector, this reflects how expectations continue to evolve. Clients are looking beyond fit out quality. They want spaces that support retention, productivity, ESG goals and long-term building performance all at once.

Interesting to see refurbishment and reuse projects receiving as much recognition as flagship new developments!
