From Military to Managing Director - IWFM Veterans in FM Network interview with Richard Jones

Not everyone falls into facilities management. Some choose it.

In this episode of 'Veterans Careers in FM', our Director Michelle Connolly speaks to Richard Jones MSc (FM) CIWFM - Veterans in FM Network shares how he purposefully made the move into Workplace & Facilities Management after a full 22-year military career, reaching Regimental Sergeant Major and achieving everything he set out to do in the Armed Forces.

Rather than leaving things to chance, Richard identified FM early as his next career path. During his final 18 months of service, he actively prepared for the transition; completing resettlement training, gaining health & safety qualifications, and joining what is now the IWFM (formerly BIFM).

He didn’t stop there. From building knowledge in finance, legal and contract management, to later completing a Master’s degree in FM and developing expertise in Lean Six Sigma, Richard took a deliberate, structured approach to building his second career.

His story challenges a common narrative, showing that with the right mindset, planning, and development, facilities management is absolutely a chosen profession, not just a destination people land in.

If you're considering your next step, this episode is a great example of what intentional career transition can look like.
