At 300 North we are keen for our staff to develop their interests and share all sides of their personality with the team. Today’s spotlight is on Jenny, our Business Manager, the seamstress of the team who as part of National Sewing Machine Day has let us have a sneek peak into her sewing room – over to you Jenny!
“Hi all! I just wanted to take this time on National Sewing Machine Day to say a few words about why I think think sewing is a great hobby. Sewing is suitable for everyone and there are a lot of engaging beginner projects using both a sewing machine and just a simple needle and thread.
I find it’s very mindful practice as you’re concentrating on the here and now and what you’re doing on the machine and with the fabric. The satisfaction of having created something yourself is a high incentive for me and as I’ve kept on practicing over the years I have moved up to more intermediate projects. For example I’m currently undertaking an online course to sew your own tailored trousers; this will hopefully mean I can produce well-fitted and unique clothes for both formal and social occasions. In a world of consumption, it’s great to learn how to make, adapt and mend clothing to help be more environmentally conscious and reduce the carbon footprint of the fast-fashion textile industry.
With many interesting and engaging beginner projects out there for free online, I can recommend sewing as a satisfying hobby that can really save you some money as well as having a positive effect on your mental health”
