Freelance Site Engineer - Setting Out - Nuclear Civils

Location: West Cumbria / Whitehaven

Rate: £400-£450 per day, depending on experience and equipment supplied

Contract: Initial six week freelance assignment with potential follow on work

Start: Anticipated mid to late October

Hours: Monday to Friday, approximately 7:00am-7:00pm

Equipment: Applications considered from engineers with or without their own setting out equipment

300 North is recruiting an experienced freelance Site Engineer / Setting Out Engineer to support a specialist civil engineering package at a major nuclear licensed site in West Cumbria.

The initial project involves the construction of an approximately 4.25 metre deep shaft using a caisson method. The anticipated initial programme is six weeks, with further shaft, tunnelling and associated civil engineering packages expected subject to the successful delivery of the first phase.

This is a hands on site engineering position focused on setting out, surveying, dimensional control, quality assurance and maintaining the detailed records required within a highly regulated nuclear environment.

Previous experience working at Sellafield or on another nuclear licensed site would be advantageous but is not essential. However, the successful engineer must be willing and able to complete all required nuclear site access, security, medical, drug and alcohol screening and onboarding processes.

Responsibilities

The Site Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Setting out civil engineering works accurately from drawings, specifications and coordinate information.

  • Establishing, maintaining and checking survey control, line and level.

  • Setting out the caisson shaft and associated reinforced concrete, excavation, drainage and temporary works activities.

  • Using total station, GPS and other surveying equipment as required.

  • Completing dimensional checks and verifying the accuracy of completed works.

  • Producing and maintaining accurate as built surveys and records.

  • Interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and design information.

  • Identifying discrepancies, raising technical queries and communicating issues to the Project Manager.

  • Supporting the sequencing and coordination of site activities.

  • Working closely with the Project Manager, Senior General Foreman, operatives, subcontractors and commercial support.

  • Completing site diaries, survey records, inspection records and other project documentation.

  • Supporting Inspection and Test Plans, quality checks and assurance processes.

  • Ensuring engineering information and records meet the standards required for a nuclear project.

  • Assisting with temporary works, design coordination and technical interfaces where required.

  • Monitoring works to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, tolerances and agreed methods.

  • Supporting client inspections, progress meetings and project reporting.

  • Promoting safe working and complying fully with RAMS, permits and site procedures.

Required Experience

Applicants should have:

  • Previous experience working as a Site Engineer, Setting Out Engineer or Civil Engineer on live construction projects.

  • Strong setting out and surveying capability.

  • Experience delivering civil engineering, groundworks or reinforced concrete packages.

  • Competence using total station and associated surveying equipment.

  • The ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and coordinate information.

  • Experience producing as built surveys and maintaining accurate QA documentation.

  • A strong understanding of line, level, dimensional control and construction tolerances.

  • The ability to work independently and resolve practical engineering issues on site.

  • High standards of accuracy, organisation and record keeping.

  • A current and appropriate CSCS card.

  • The right to work in the UK.

Experience involving shafts, caissons, tunnelling, deep drainage, confined structures, water infrastructure or similar specialist civils would be particularly relevant.

An HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.
