An experienced freelance Project Manager is required to lead the delivery of a specialist heavy civil engineering package in Cumbria.

This is a senior, site based position with full responsibility for the delivery of the package from mobilisation through to completion. The Project Manager will lead a team comprising a Senior General Foreman, commercial support and approximately five or six site operatives.

Project Manager responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for the safe and successful delivery of the civil engineering package.

  • Manage the project from mobilisation through to completion and handover.

  • Develop and maintain the construction programme.

  • Manage progress, productivity, resources and short term planning.

  • Lead the Senior General Foreman, site operatives and subcontractors.

  • Coordinate temporary works and design related activities.

  • Manage communication with the client and other project stakeholders.

  • Attend and lead project progress meetings.

  • Coordinate with the commercial team regarding costs, variations and reporting.

  • Identify and manage programme, technical, commercial and delivery risks.

  • Ensure compliance with RAMS, construction-phase plans and site procedures.

  • Maintain accurate quality, safety and project documentation.

  • Manage labour, plant, materials and subcontracted resources.

  • Ensure work is delivered safely, on programme and to the required quality standards.

Essential experience

  • Previous experience working as a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager within civil engineering.

  • Strong heavy civils construction experience.

  • Experience delivering shaft, caisson, tunnelling, deep-excavation, reinforced concrete or similar civil engineering works.

  • Experience taking full responsibility for a construction package.

  • Strong temporary works experience.

  • Previous involvement in design coordination.

  • Experience managing directly employed site teams and subcontractors.

  • Strong programme management and short-term planning capability.

  • Commercial awareness, including variations, cost coordination and progress reporting.

  • Experience working within highly regulated or safety critical environments.

  • Strong client facing, leadership and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage detailed quality, safety and compliance documentation.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold:

  • SMSTS.

  • First Aid at Work.

  • Appropriate CSCS management card.

  • Temporary Works Coordinator qualification.

Experience working under NEC3 or NEC4 contracts would be highly advantageous.

Previous experience within nuclear, energy, utilities or other regulated infrastructure environments would be beneficial but is not essential. Applicants must be willing to complete the required medical, drug and alcohol screening, security checks and site access process before commencing work.

This position would suit an experienced Civils Project Manager, Construction Project Manager or Senior Project Manager with a background in heavy civil engineering, shafts, caissons, tunnelling, deep excavations or reinforced concrete structures.
