Handyperson required to work for a prestigious school in Ilkley.
As the school Handyperson you will report into the Headteacher and will manage three Assistant Caretakers.

- Working hours 10 am - 6 pm every day during term time, and 8 am - 4 pm during the school’s holidays

As the Handyperson you will be required to carry out a variety of basic maintenance tasks including plumbing and joinery and the successful candidate will ideally hold industry recognised qualifications in these disciplines.
Qualifications and Experience
- The successful candidate will be required to apply for an Enhanced DBS clearance
- Qualifications or relevant experience in Plumbing or Joinery and general DIY duties
- Industry recognised H&S ( Health & Safety) qualifications are required as well as Fire Safety
- Full UK Drivers Licence required
The Caretaker will be required to carry out the following duties;
- Cleaning the school to a high standard in conjunction with the Assistant Caretakers and on-site cleaner.
- Security: This will involve helping to monitor visitors during the school day, being aware of the necessity of safety and security in and around the school at all times and advising the Headteacher of any issues noted around the site. At the end of each day being responsible to ensure everyone has left the building and the building is secure, securing the premises and setting the alarm. The Caretaker is a primary keyholder and contact for the alarm monitoring service and emergency services should the alarm go off out of school hours.
- Outside Maintenance of the grounds to a very high standard bearing in mind that this is a key “selling point” for the school. This will comprise lawn mowing, gardening and cleaning of tarmac areas on a regular basis, as well as some painting of the school building as and when required. A vital part of the outside maintenance programme will be the preparation of games pitches for the various sports in which the children are involved. During the winter months, snow and ice clearance of the driveway, footpaths and car park is essential to ensure the safety of pupils, parents and staff. This would be from early morning – e.g. 7 am. Daily hours would be altered, or overtime would be paid, as appropriate.
- Interior Work and Maintenance of the school buildings as directed. This will include small repairs, organisation of the dining hall for lunches, setting up rooms for Governors’ and Parents’ Committee meetings, as well as redecoration of the school on a rolling programme (usually during the school holiday periods). The Caretaker is responsible of ordering all cleaning and maintenance supplies and ensuring stock levels are maintained at all times.
- Driving of the School Minibus as required (subject to DVLA conditions). This may be for trips out of school or for away matches.
- Seasonal jobs to include arranging the Christmas decorations around the school, erecting the seating and staging for school events such as shows and Harvest, making props for school shows as appropriate, setting up the Hall for Parents’ Evenings, organising the grounds for Speech Days (July) and other tasks as required.
These jobs will need to be undertaken on a structured programme which will be subject to review with the Headteacher particularly in the early weeks of the appointment.
Whilst there is no requirement for regular weekend working, there will be occasions when this will be required - for example at Open Days or Summer Fairs. Plenty of notice will be given for such events, and overtime will be paid accordingly.
