FACILITIES SHOW 2019: CHALLENGES, TRENDS AND PREDICTIONS

FACILITIES SHOW 2019: CHALLENGES, TRENDS AND PREDICTIONS

We love working as a team from our offices in Leeds & Newcastle but it’s also important to us that we spend time away from our working environment, keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in the Facilities Management (FM) industry.

This allows us to understand any challenges, trends or predictions that might impact our business, our clients and our candidates. It’s also the reason we schedule one particular annual event into our diaries - the world's largest dedicated FM event that attracts thousands of people from all over the world - AKA Facilities Show.

GETTING OUR GEEK ON
With our bags packed, we were ready to immerse ourselves in everything the show had to offer at ExCeL London.

Showcasing the latest facilities and building management innovations, it probably comes as no surprise that this year’s theme was ‘technology’ with mental health and workplace wellbeing high on the agenda. These topics were also the inspiration for two new additions to this year’s show - The Smart Buildings Expo (including a full-size replica of a smart office) and Workplace Wellbeing Show.

We attended several panel sessions (and rested our feet!) including sessions on Brexit and what it means for FM, outsourcing, TFM, productivity and technology.

OUR KEY TAKEAWAYS

Over the coming weeks, we’ll follow up on this introductory piece with more detailed content on some of the themes from the show but here is a teaser on what’s to come…

- Smart technology and what we understand about smart buildings and how they can benefit businesses.

- Incorporating technological and non-technological approaches into the workplace to improve wellbeing.

- The added value that FM can provide for businesses, the economy and wider society.

- Recognition by organisations that physical environments have a real, tangible impact on employees’ performance.

- The use of technology in fire detection and solutions to combat safety risks in the workplace.

- Productivity and how it can be increased with measures such as CO2 sensors to ensure optimum performance.

- Insourcing vs outsourcing including challenges and benefits, and how organisations such as Stanstead Airport have introduced an insourcing approach for their cleaning staff.

- The need to should louder about FM and the issues faced when trying to recruit young tech-savvy people into the industry.

- The move away from KPIs with value no longer about cost but the outcome.

Keep an eye out for more information on these key points and make a note in your diary for next year’s Facilities Show taking place from 19 - 21 May 2020.
